The 27-year-old overcame a slow start to surge clear of her rivals late in the run leg on Sunday morning.
Gentle now sits level with former coach Craig Walton’s record six victories and one clear of 2008 Olympic gold medalist Emma Frodeno (nee Snowsill).
“Out on the bike after a bad swim it was like, 'What would Waldo tell me to do?' He'd probably say hurry the hell up,” Gentle told AAP.
“He'd be happy about that [win], too, and it's an honour to be up there alongside his name.
“I had to work so hard. I knew this would be one of my most hard-fought victories if I was to win.”
Gentle finished ahead of fellow Wollongong Wizard Natalie Van Coevorden, who edged Radka Kahlefeldt in a sprint finish.
The men’s event was won by Wollongong-based triathlete Aaron Royle, with Ryan Bailie in third.
