Mr Scully and Keira MP Ryan Park have written to Roads Minister Melinda Pavey requesting a safety review of the site in the wake of Monday’s truck accident – the third in 12 years.

There has been a public call for a wall or barriers to be erected across the car park to stop trucks from crashing through, but Mr Scully wasn't sure that was the answer.

“Hard infrastructure barriers and the like can also have the unintended consequence of creating the danger of serious injury or death to drivers who are in a vehicle they’ve lost control of, which may have happened though no fault of their own,” Mr Scully said.

“We’ve got to think about this in terms of all the options that might be available to us.

“Simply putting up a small concrete wall might sound good on the face of it but could end up with a driver hitting that and being projected through a truck windscreen.

“It could create unintended consequences that no one would like to see.”

Mr Scully said he was happy to wait for the Roads and Maritime Services experts to assess the site and options from all angles.

Mr Scully also suggested the return of a Transport Workers Union education campaign around how truck drivers should safely descent Mt Ousley.
