The road through the northern Illawarra has become steadily congested over the years, particularly on weekends.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesman said traffic counters and cameras had been installed at a number of locations on Saturday.
“Twelve traffic counters are currently in operation along Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Austinmer and Helensburgh to assess traffic volumes and queue lengths,” the spokesman said.
“The investigations are part of regular network monitoring.”
They will remain in place until later this week, the spokesman said.
