Last year, Dr Nick Marsden curated his first exhibition, Illuminate, in Wollongong.
Dr Marsden said he was surprised by the large number of Illawarra creatives who asked if they could be involved with the project, which sought to help raise awareness of mental health-related issues.
“I invited about a dozen local artists to exhibit their works, all of which had some story or relation to mental illness,” he said.
“There were many artists who had suffered mental illness, or had known of others that had suffered mental illness.
“It was a very successful evening and, I believe, got people talking about mental health in ways that they may not have otherwise.”
Therefore, the exhibition is returning for a second year, with more artists involved.
Paintings, drawings, digital media, print media and live performance art will all be featured.
Illuminate’s opening night is on Thursday (November 15) from 5.30pm to 8.30pm at Timber Mill Studios, Bulli ( located at 2-6 Molloy Street).
There will be a musical performance by Lo Roberts and Ewen P.G.
The exhibition will also be on display over the weekend, from 9am to 5pm daily.
Featured artworks will be sold via silent auction, with funds raised donated to the Movember Foundation.
“The well-being of our community is dependent on all of us coming together and having open, honest and frank conversations about mental illness,” Dr Marsden said.
