Michael Honan was filmed by witnesses as he and the alleged driver, Rian Kinloch, clambered out of the white Holden Commodore, which had come to rest in a flower bed at the front of Total Care Dentist Surgery after hitting a gutter on Lake Entrance Road at speed.
The pair was seen to start “wiping down” the car to remove any fingerprints before both men ran off up Madigan Boulevard.
Police allege Kinloch ran into the rear yard of one house, dumped clothing he’d pulled out of the car into a shed and then ran off.
Meantime, Honan entered a neighbouring house. He was in bed “pretending to be asleep” when police discovered him inside.
He was arrested but refused to give up Kinloch’s identity, later telling the writer of his sentencing options report that he would “not give up his mates”.
Honan was charged with being carried in a stolen car and failing to disclose driver’s identity, to which he subsequently pleaded guilty
In court on Tuesday, Magistrate Peter Thompson noted Honan had a history of unsatisfactory interactions with Community Corrections, including failed bids at community service and supervision components of previous sentences.
He also failed to turn up to scheduled appointments for the current matter.
“I have great concern about his prospects of rehabilitation at this time,” Magistrate Thompson said.
Honan will be released on parole in March next year.
Kinloch was arrested in mid-October and charged with driving offences. His case is still before the courts.
