But the news has not been welcomed by some customers.

People with accounts at the branch were sent out a letter stating the Corrimal branch would close its doors permanently at 3pm on November 30.

“We've seen changes in customer behaviour as more people find using ATMs or internet and mobile banking as convenient ways to bank, and sometimes we need to make the decision to close branches in locations like Corrimal, where fewer customers come in for ‘over the counter’ help,” the letter stated.

It also states people can do their banking via the post office at Corrimal, or travel to St George branches at Wollongong or Figtree.

For customer Robyn Neal the news wasn't welcome.

While the northern suburbs 72-year-old said travelling to another branch wouldn’t be an issue for her, she felt others might find it difficult.

“It will be more inconvenient I feel for the older people in the district because to go into Wollongong they’ve got to find parking, pay for parking and then they have to walk a good distance in order to get to a St George Bank,” Ms Neal said.

“I think with all these banks closing it’s making it difficult for people.”

Ms Neal said she preferred dealing with staff in a branch rather than banking online would likely travel to Wollongong.

“I don’t use it I don’t like to use it,” she said of internet banking.

“I could use it but whilst I’m able to go to a bank I prefer to do that. There can be issues with internet banking with your computer, so I think for safety’s sake I much prefer to go to the bank.”

A spokeswoman for St George Bank said the closure of the branch was not a reflection of its investment in the region. 

“We wish for the community to know that this is not a decision we take lightly and we remain invested across the Illawarra region, in particular modernising our branches in regions where we know our customers are preferring to visit, bank and shop,” the spokeswoman said.

“However in response to the way our customers are choosing to bank with us in Corrimal and the reduction in customers using this branch, we have made a decision to close the St.George Corrimal branch on Friday November 30.”

The spokeswoman said 98 per cent of the transactions taking place at the Corrimal branch could also be done at the post office just to the north.

“Until it’s closure, the staff at Corrimal can help transition customers to this service,” the St George spokeswoman said.
