Sydney Water crews worked to repair the break and water was turned back on at about 1.30pm.
A resident Col Bruton said the main burst on Dymock Street at about 9am sending water shooting into the sky.
A Sydney Water spokesman said crews were on site at about 10am this morning and turned off the eruption within 10 minutes.
In a separate incident, Sydney Water crews are working to repair a broken hydrant on the Princes Highway in Fairy Meadow.
The spokesman said crews had reduced the flow of water before starting urgent repairs.
Water is being diverted from an alternate water supply so homes and business are not without water. They will likely have reduced water pressure.
The spokesman said the cause of the two incidents were not yet known.
