Artistsic director and chief executive Simon Hinton said planning and locking in shows each season was years in the making. And considerable thought and time was spent giving Illawarra audiences what they want.
Mr Hinton said the 2019 season theatre goers will be spoiled for choice with productions ranging from mainstage plays, to children's shows, music theatre, comedy and dance.
Kicking off 2019 is a repertory season of two works from the British theatre company, Hoipolloi, from February 6 to 9.
Written and performed by Hoipolloi's artistic director Shôn Dale-Jones, Mr Hinton said both The Duke and Me and Robin Hood are masterclasses in storytelling. “Touching, funny and imaginative, both works seek to challenge the norms and often misplaced priorities of a world seemingly forever on the edge of chaos”.
In March, IPAC will be home to Dust, from the Helpmann Award-winning Dancenorth which is regarded as a new powerhouse on the Australian dance scene. “Co-commissioned by Merrigong Theatre Company and assisted by the Australian Government’s Major Festivals Initiative, Dust uses a daring and stylish blend of movement, music and design from transdisciplinary architectural firm Liminal Spaces to take audiences on an enthralling journey into the legacy of civilisation and the impact of human inheritance through the generations”.
Merrigong is also partnering with Gold Coast’s Bleach Festival to produce the feel-good stage adaptation of Tim Baker’s children’s book, The Surfer and the Mermaid.
Darlinghurst Theatre Company's production of the smash-hit Broadway musical Once will arrive in July. “It is a love story set in modern-day Dublin. It is the only Broadway show in history to include music that has won Oscar, Grammy, Olivier and Tony awards”.
Making its world premiere in Wollongong is a comedy about a critical time in Australian history and the man that shaped it. Jonathan Biggins stars as Paul Keating, in The Gospel According to Paul. And Belvoir returns with their smash-hit, the rock ’n’ roll fuelled Barbara and The Camp Dogs, written by Alana Valentine and Ursula Yovich.
Spiegeltent Wollongong returns to the Arts Precinct in April and May.
Highlights include a spectacular new show Deluxe Deluxe from the team behind 2018's LIMBO. And Aussie comedy royalty Lano and Woodley will perform an hilarious tribute to the pioneers of flight, the Wright Brothers, in FLY.
