Zunic missed out on his European Tour card at the final stage of qualifying in Spain, a week after winning the Queensland Open.
“After 24 hours of travelling (Thursday) afternoon is going to be interesting but wouldn’t miss this tournament for the world,” Zunic wrote on Facebook before the first round.
He finished with a one-over round of 73 in windy and rainy conditions, which saw fellow Illawarra professional Travis Smyth struggle to finish six-over the card.
The cut is currently at two-over.
Smyth had five bogeys, a double and a birdie.
Zunic tees off from the 10th at 8.05am on Friday with Steven Jeffress and Peter Wilson, while Smyth starts from the first at 7am with Mark Brown and Ben Eccles.
Korean Byeong-hun An leads at -5.
