Located in part of the Anita’s Theatre building off Lawrence Hargrave Drive, the new Collins Booksellers store is all about great service and atmosphere.
Owners and sisters Amander Isler and Deborah Thompson said, “The shopfront features gorgeous stained glass windows, we have an old-fashioned pianola inside and we have created dedicated children’s reading spaces.
“We want this to be a place where individuals and families love to visit and while they are at it can find an amazing new book to purchase and take home.”
Even though the doors have only recently opened and the shelves are still in the process of being fully stocked, the feedback from customers has already been very positive, with many people thanking them for opening the bookstore.
“I think people have fallen back in love with reading from a physical book. With people spending so much time on screens during the day at work they like to be able to come home and read from paper,” Amanda said.
“It’s also important for parents to read to their kids and instill a love of books early on.”
The store plans to have a roster of events, book clubs and author visits to help build the experience and encourage people to visit.
Collins Booksellers Thirroul is located at Shop 5, 264 Lawrence Hargrave Drive. Phone them on 4267 1408.

Trent Dalton visits to promote book
Collins Booksellers in Thirroul has only recently opened but they have already celebrated with a visit from one of their favourite Australian authors.
Trent Dalton was in store last week to promote his debut book Boy Swallows Universe.
The novel is a coming-of-age story set in Brisbane’s violent working-class suburban fringe, inspired by the real-life events of journalist Trent Dalton’s complicated youth.
The book tells the story of 13-year-old Eli Bell who finds comfort in his extraordinary imagination as a means of escaping from his complicated life with a mute brother, a mother in jail, a heroin dealer for a stepfather and a notorious crim for a babysitter.
Surrounded by chaos and with very little moral guidance from the adults around him, Eli sets out on an ambitious suburban odyssey that sees him break into Boggo Road Gaol to rescue his mum, meet the father he doesn’t remember, come face-to-face with the criminals who tore his world apart, and fall in love with the girl of his dreams.
Benjamin Law said, “As a brilliant journalist, Trent Dalton has always intimately understood how fact is often stranger than fiction. Perhaps it took someone like him to produce a novel so humming with truth. Call it a hunch, but I think he might’ve just written an Australian classic.”
