People will turn up in their thousands from all parts of the country and some even overseas. Why?
Because it is Convoy time, that’s why.
Few things resonate so broadly in this community like Convoy.
Thousands line the streets of the Illawarra to watch the seemingly endless procession of trucks, motorbikes and other vehicles pass by.
While the forecast may be for a bit of wet weather, the people will come regardless.
Yet the heart of the event is about driving fundraising for those in our community who need it most, particularly those with seriously ill children.
The i98FM Illawarra Convoy was introduced into this community in 2005 and since then it has become an institution.
The funds raised now into The Illawarra Community Foundation for dispersing across the region as required.
This year, following the Convoy, the crowds will gather at a new location.
The Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park will be the scene of this year’s Convoy celebrations.
Aussie rock band and ARIA award winners Sheppard will headline the concert as part of the free family fun day as will another iconic Australian band, the Choirboys.
There will plenty of action for the family at the airport with performance motocross, helicopter joy rides. a Convoy flag skydive, carnival rides and various displays.
One young man who will sleep very little on Saturday night is the young man on our special Convoy front page.
Four-year-old Quade Sharman missed last year’s event as he was undergoing treatment for kidney cancer, but he will be a part of the Convoy itself this year.
The smile of the faces of kids like Quade is exactly what this is all about.
Congratulations to each and every single person who has donated, fundraised or volunteered their time for this wonderful cause.
We will have live vision of the 2018 Convoy as it makes its way through the Illawarra on Sunday on our Illawarra Mercury Facebook page
