Regional Manager South Drew Rodwell said Endeavour Energy staff were passionate about helping those in need in the Illawarra community.
And for Mr Wheeler being part of this year’s event has a particularly personal meaning.
“My 13 year old son James has as a rare genetic condition which causes bleeding on the brain, and has needed 50 major operations over his short life.” he said.
“James needs the full-time care of my wife Moira, who also looks after our other two sons, including Jack who unfortunately has the same rare condition.
“Being a single income family of five, we are very grateful for the financial assistance provided by the Illawarra Community Foundation to help us care for James and Jack.
“I feel very strongly about being part of this year’s Illawarra Convoy and giving to other families who also need a helping hand.”
Mr Rodwell said he was incredibly proud of Mr Wheeler and the eight other participants from Endeavour Energy.
“To have workers who want go that extra yard to make a positive difference in their community,” Mr Rodwell said.
“The Illawarra Convoy is a classic regional fundraiser that captures the hearts and minds of everyone involved.
“Rod and his workmates will be amongst more than 800 trucks and 1000 motorbikes taking part in this year’s fundraising event.
“Rod’s story really brings home how important it is to support those amongst us dealing with potentially life threatening illnesses.”
Mr Rodwell said participation in the convoy was another great example of Endeavour Energy workers in the Illawarra rallying behind their community.
“Our workers in Ulladulla donated $6000 to drought-stricken farmers by forgoing celebrations funded by Endeavour Energy to celebrate their achievement of 15 years without a lost time injury.
“Endeavour Energy also recently provided a truck to help Doing it for our Farmers Illawarra deliver 22 pallets of donated goods to farming families in the grip of drought in Central West NSW.”
