The revelation was made by Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba at the completion of a $7 million upgrade.
It came just days after Shellharbour Private received accreditation from NSW Ministry of Health following an extensive review of all certifications, health department requirements and inspection for safety and quality.
The multi-million dollar redevelopment includes the introduction of a new, interactive state-of-the-art Stryker theatre, 30 single rooms with ensuites and three twin rooms.
There is a unique patient flow designed to improve patient safety, streamline efficiency and reduce operating times and overall hospital stay.
The hospital’s latest theatre technology features a combination of equipment and software that transforms a traditional operating room.
Ultra-high-definition imagery, tailored video, easier handling and positioning of operating theatre equipment along with voice-activated lights and less clutter will allow fewer staff injuries and improved patient outcomes.
Shellharbour Private Hospital’s surgical capacity will increase by 100 operations per month (up to 500) in various fields including orthopaedics, urology, cosmetic surgery, gastroenterology, gynaecology and ophthalmic surgery.
Cr Saliba said Saturday’s opening was a very special occasion because the extensive upgrade and improvement that will attract and provide world-class surgeons to the Illawarra.
“Shellharbour Private Hospital’s redevelopment is testament to its commitment to deliver superior surgical options to Illawarra residents without their need to have to travel to larger metropolitan cities,” she said.
“We can proudly say, leading medical experts are not only based in the Illawarra, but practice out of the Illawarra. We’re entering a new era of medical care in our community and Shellharbour Private is helping to lead the way.
“It is really great to have a facility like this in Shellharbour city. It compliments the services that are provided by the State Government and it is really important for our community not to have to go elsewhere to get those specialty services that can now be provided here at this hospital.”
Shellharbour Private Hospital’s chief executive Gary Cadwallender said Saturday was an important day for the hospital and Shellharbour.
“This is a $7 million investment in the hospital so we can do a lot more procedures and invest more into the community. We would like to thank everyone for their patience over the last few months,” he said.
Cr Saliba said she had been a patient in the hospital more than once and gave it a very big thumbs up.
“It is a great hospital and the staff are absolutely dedicated”.
