McDevitt walked to the crease at 5-58 after the Cougars were sent in.

He remained unbeaten on 35 off 58 balls, while Smith was 42 not out from 91 balls.

Port’s opener Daniel Lee did the damage early, taking all five wickets, before the match was halted shortly after tea, with Corrimal 5-117 off 47.3 overs.

“It was hard going, just one of those days where both teams wanted to bowl,” McDevitt said. “By the time I was out there it had started to flatten out a bit and the shine on the ball had gone, it was doing a fair bit early. 

“It just depends on how many overs we can bat next week and hopefully set something for us to bowl at.”

While Corrimal have pushed into the top four after six rounds, Port Kembla are buoyed by last Saturday’s 44-run victory over Helensburgh.

Elsewhere, a fighting half-century by representative batsman Graeme Batty saved Balgownie’s blushes after being sent in by Wests at Figtree Oval.

Only three batsmen managed double-figures for the Magpies after they were on the wrong side of the coin, with Batty holding the innings together with 55 and Jason Bunyan making 26.

Bally were all out 128 from 46 overs, with Wests hoping for better weather this week prior to their run chase.

Wollongong’s Duncan Maddinson is eyeing off a century after producing a patient innings to be 84 not out, as the Lighthouse Keepers ended the day’s play at 8-233 after 68 overs.

Maddinson faced 195 balls at Reed Park, with Dale Scifleet bowling 34 overs for 4-79, while Pat Hammond took 3-62 from 15 overs.

Wollongong were 2-11 after Cooper Maddinson (0) and David Studholme (11) departed early and then lost 3-8 midway through their innings.

But a crucial 61-run stand between Maddinson and William Whitehouse (23 not out) ensured they finished the day on top.

In the other match, Uni captain Mitch Hearn avoided disaster against Helensburgh. Hearn faced 113 balls for his unbeaten 46, as Uni struggled to 8-130 after being sent in by the Tigers.

Luke Falkiner did most of the damage, taking 4-44 from 15 overs.
