Govers had returned to the Kookaburras squad in May, having last played an international game in 2016, after being overlooked for the Rio Olympics squad.
Playing for Albion Park, Sutherland and NSW since and scored in Darwin International final, where the Kookaburras lost 2-1 to Argentina.
A striker with a lethal drag-flick who struggled with hip and hamstring injuries, Govers then missed out on World Cup selection and instead announced his retirement on social media on Sunday.
“I am honoured to have been able to have had some influence on so many players careers and hopefully my approach to how I went about things has been seen,” Govers wrote on Facebook.
“I left no stone unturned and gave everything 100% I tried.
“A career full of injuries but it has made me the person I am today, the boundaries I pushed, the limits I reached is what you need to be an elite athlete and maybe a reason why I didn’t play the 200+ I should have.
“The green and gold No.27 and I part ways now and I cannot wait to see who gets it for the next journey. When they say leave the jersey in a better place.
“I think I have done a great job of ensuring a high standard was kept.”
He made his international debut and won Champions Trophy titles in 2010 and 2012, World Cups in 2010 and 2014 and gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
