On his Instagram page, the international hockey star and London Olympic bronze medallist Kieran Govers called “time” after “126 games, 60 goals and a million unforgettable memories”.
The man who played his junior hockey at Albion park said:
I am honoured to have been able to have had some influence on so many players careers and hopefully my approach to how I went about things has been seen. I left no stone unturned and gave everything 100 per cent I tried.
A career full of injuries but it has made me the person I am today, the boundaries I pushed, the limits I reached is what you need to be an elite athlete and maybe a reason why I didn’t play the 200+ I should have.
The green and gold #27 and I part ways now and I cannot wait to see who gets it for the next journey.
When they say leave the jersey in a better place: “I think I have done a great job of ensuring a high standard was kept”. I cannot wait to take on new adventures and see what the future brings.
Govers made his international debut and won Champions Trophy titles in 2010 and 2012, World Cups in 2010 and 2014 and gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.
The outpouring of responses across various social media platforms spoke of the high regard in which Govers is held. In response, the Kookaburras tweeted: “Congratulations on an amazing career, you truly embody #PrideOfTheKookas”
Many of the responses spoke about the wonderful legacy Govers leaves behind for Australian hockey and those who follow in his footsteps.
In life all we can hope for is to leave the things we touch in a better state than what we have found them. To be a positive influence. Kieran Govers has done just that.
The Illawarra Mercury too would like to congratulate you too Keiran on a stellar career which left no stone unturned.
