The owners of the converted motorhome had only moments earlier departed the vehicle, having arrived home from a holiday down the North Coast.
They went inside their Rothery Road home before coming back outside when they noticed the bus was on fire.
Firefighters were on the scene quickly and extinguished the fire by about 4.30pm.
Wollongong Fire Station duty commander Inspector John Paull said the blaze was contained to the bus, which was destroyed by the fire.
“The occupants had travelled home from a holiday, pulled in the driveway at home and noticed a strange electrical smell,” he said.
“They went inside but when they came back outside they noticed the vehicle was on fire.”
There was no one in the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, and no one was hurt.
“The house and surrounds were not damaged. The fire was confined to the bus only, which was totally destroyed,” Insp Paull said.
“There was no suspicious circumstances. At this stage we believe it is a mechanical defect.”
