And the NRMA is tipping the price to keep going down through to the end of next week.

A month ago, Illawarra motorists were being stung an average of 162.1 cents per litre for regular unleaded.

But some servos in the region were charging more than that, going beyond the 170-cent mark.

Since then the average price has been steadily falling – as of Tuesday morning it was 135.7.

Tuesday saw a 29-cent price gap with the lowest price for unleaded being 122.9 cents at several stations in the Barrack Heights area.

The highest unleaded price was the Thirroul Caltex at 151.9 cents a litre.

Rebecca Page from the NRMA said that 29-cent gap was “huge” and suggested some stations weren’t passing on discounts to motorists.

“Typically we see in regional areas gaps of about 10 cents and we think that is significant,” Ms Page said.

“When you’ve got more than a 20-cent gap, the onus comes back to the retailers – they’re charging whatever they want to. This is a prime example of some retailers holding onto the highs when they should be dropping to the lows.”

She added that gap was more reason why motorists should use online apps to shop around and find the cheapest petrol.

The large drop in prices over the last month was due to a combination of factors, including a stronger Australian dollar closing the gap on the cost of imported fuel and reduced demand for oil from China, Japan and Europe

Ms Page said prices in the Illawarra should continue to fall “well into the end of next week”, possibly going as low as 126 cents a litre.

Motorists should enjoy the low prices while they’re here because Ms Page said the rises are on the way.

“As we head into December we’re going to see the start of the next price cycle and we’re going to see prices start to creep up a little,” she said.

“But we don’t expect them to be as high as they have been.”
