Portuguese news outlets reported the 18-year-old suffered the serious burns late last week at a Lisbon petrol station.
News Ltd is reporting Henry’s mother Kate has made her way to Portugal. The Mercury’s attempts to contact Mrs Kocatekin late last night were unsuccessful.
Portuguese news site Jornal reported Henry was first taken to Hospital Santa Maria in Lisbon before being transferred on Friday to Hospital São João in Porto.
The former Smiths Hill High School student appears to be on a world wide adventure, taking to Twitter only last month to say he’d booked accommodation in London.
Henry’s injuries are another blow for the much-loved family, who lost their daughter and sister Alice in 2012 from mitochondrial disease.
Before Alice died, she and Henry ran the City2Surf three years in a row and backpacked around Asia.
“It doesn’t equate to the pain, but it’s good that we have those memories and we can laugh about things,” Henry said at the time..
The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Tuesday evening they were assisting an Australian man in Portugal.
“The Department is providing consular assistance to an Australian man in Portugal and his family. For privacy reasons we are unable to provide further details,” they said in a written statement provided to the Mercury.
Henry has a history of involvement with the community extending beyond being an advocate for his sister’s illness: he took part in the 2018 Lifesaving Exchange Program as part of his role in the Scarborough/Wombarra Surf Life Saving Club, and he was also awarded the Mito Foundation Youth Award in 2015.
