Federal Government funding for the Illawarra-Shoalhaven Smart Water Management Project will help the region respond to such events.
Regional Development Australia (RDA) Illawarra chief executive Debra Murphy welcomed the announcement of $400,000 from the Smart Cities and Suburbs Program.
The announcement was made by Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population minister Alan Tudge.
“The Smart Water project will bolster resilience in our region and enable more effective emergency and environmental management systems and responses,” Ms Murphy said.
“This project will deliver innovative technological Smart Water solutions for the region and is supported by the Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama and Shoalhaven Councils, along with the University of Wollongong, SMART Infrastructure Facility and private sector.”
Ms Murphy said the project was one of the lighthouse projects for RDA Illawarra’s Illawarra-Shoalhaven Smart Regions Strategy.
The strategy was developed in collaboration with the Illawarra-Shoalhaven Joint Organisation (ISJO), regional councils and RDA Illawarra.
Ms Murphy said RDA Illawarra will continue to work with regional stakeholders to implement our Smart Regions Strategy.
She said by doing so it will help Wollongong to continue to live up to it metropolitan city tagline as the City of Innovation.
The Smart Regions Strategy has been one of the focuses for the new RDA Illawarra board that met for the first time in July.
Chair Eddy De Gabriele welcomed many new faces to what he described as the most diverse board yet.
It means RDA Illawarra is able to draw on a good cross section of people with a broad range of knowledge eager to act in the best interests of the region.
