Speaking 20 minutes before the end of the last parliamentary sitting day until after the March 23, 2019, state election, Mr Scully said it was “abundantly clear” nothing would happen at Unanderra station.

“If re-elected next March, the government will continue its eight years of neglect of Unanderra station,” Mr Scully said.

“It is clear that the government is satisfied with forcing passengers – the elderly, people with disability, commuters with bags and parents with prams, among others – to struggle up and down 72 stairs to access the platform at Unanderra station.”

Transport for NSW has said an accessibility upgrade “will be delivered at Unanderra station” but had declined to state when that will occur.

However, the perception that stations ranked below Unanderra in the priority list have been getting upgrades has not sat well with local residents.

Mr Scully was concerned about the message being sent by the government’s plans to spend $2.2 billion on new Sydney stadiums rather than fixing Unanderra station.

Hey said there was no reason for delaying the project and that lifts were the only solution.

“The plans already exist – I have seen them – and there are no safe alternatives,” he said.

“The station is also a siding for freight trains, meaning that a tunnel under the line is not an option, nor is a level crossing, as freight trains stabled on the western side of the station will block the level crossing.”
