Among the basketball fans visiting Wollongong for Sunday’s game were Susan Skellet and her son Lachlan. In 2017 they travelled down the Princes Hwy for every Hawks home game.
Lachlan is a big Demetrius Conger fan so on Sunday he was cheering on his hero in his first game for Adelaide. But the mother and son basketball fans attend every Sydney Kings and Illawarra game and always cheer on the Hawks in that sporting rivalry.
“Lachlan is a member here so we come down for all the Hawks games. He is a big basketball fan. The Hawks have all been really great to him. Kevin White has done some coaching with him and now he is a rep player and doing really well. I have got very attached to the Hawks. Lachlan likes the Brisbane Bullets as well but last time they played here I was screaming for the Hawks. We are Sydney Kings members as well. When the Illawarra is playing we are Hawks fans in Sydney.
Last year they spent New Year’s Eve in Wollongong to attend a game and soak up the atmosphere along the foreshore. They enjoyed it so much this year they plan to do it again.
“We are staying this year for two nights. I think we stayed overnight four times last year. We really like it here. It is a great town and a really good community,” Mrs Skellet said.
Lachlan said the WEC was a really good stadium that allowed him to watch the game close to the players and meet his heroes. He likes the Hawks because they also hold training days and the players are really accessible.
“We enjoyed that last year. We came down for that and stayed the night for the game the next day,” Mrs Skellet said.
