Emergency services – including two Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews – were called to a fire at a unit on Farrell Street about 9.10pm on Thursday.
A FRNSW spokesman said firefighters arrived to find a “working fire” in an upper level unit.
The crews worked to put out the fire, and prevent it spreading, before searching the complex.
A woman – believed to be aged in her 50s – was found in a smoke-filled room and had to be carried from the residence by firefighters.
She was conscious and breathing, and was later assessed by paramedics at the scene.
The woman – the sole occupant of the unit – suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Wollongong Hospital.
The extent of her injuries was unknown. However, it is understood the woman was not burnt in the fire.
Inspector Don Faulds, from Wollongong police, said investigations into the cause of the fire were continuing.
“Police haven’t been able to formally speak to the owner to find out the cause of it, but we don’t think it’s suspicious,” Inspector Faulds said.
The fire was extinguished by 9.30pm. All other occupants of the unit complex evacuated. No one else was injured.
