At 2.30pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Dapto, Unanderra, Colo Vale, Hill Top, Lake Nepean and the area just east of Bowral.
These thunderstorms are moving towards the northeast, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
They are forecast to affect Wollongong, Bargo, the area south of Wilton, Bulli, Lake Cataract and Thirroul by 2.55 pm and Appin, Picton, Wedderburn, Darkes Forest, Helensburgh and Stanwell Park by 3.25 pm.
Large hailstones are likely, the bureau said.
Illawarra residents have been warned to brace for flash flooding as an intense weather system bringing heavy rainfall, wild winds and dangerous surf tracks towards the region.
The bureau says a low pressure system over central Australia is expected to move into the northwest of NSW on Tuesday and track southeast, rapidly intensifying as it crosses the coast in the Greater Sydney area during Wednesday.
Up to 150 millimetres of rain could soak the region.
