School students and businesses have participated in the Illawarra Mercury’s latest Design An Ad project and the result is some unique and creative designs.

Design An Ad, now celebrating 32 years, operates throughout Fairfax’s Australian Community Media network.
School students are given the opportunity to design and create an advert for a participating local business. These designs must be hand drawn and must follow a design brief as outlined by the business.
The designs that were chosen as finalists can be viewed throughout the pages of this special feature.
This project gives students the opportunity to use their imagination, connect with local businesses and showcase their talent.
The first, second and third place winners of Design An Ad received cash prizes, the winning school also received a cash prize and participating teachers that registered for the Design An Ad project went into the draw to win an iPad.
HOW DESIGN AN AD WORKS:
- School students create an ad for a local business sponsor
- The business supplies an advertising brief
- Ads must be drawn by hand
- Once the designs are complete they are sent to the sponsor business and a shortlist of finalists is created
- Australian Community Media judges choose the winning design
It’s a chance to support creativity
Design An Ad is a competition that provides great prizes to the schools and students involved but it wouldn’t happen without the support of its sponsors.
This year Lancaster Law & Mediation was the major sponsor of this project.
Director solicitor Graham Lancaster said they decided to sponsor the competition because they had been involved as a participant previously and thought it to be a great way to test the creativity of students, both artistically and as graphic designers, whilst allowing businesses to see how young people might view their business.
“Certainly, not all young people are good at writing, maths or other school subjects, and this competition may awaken or encourage a talent in art, marketing or graphic design,” Graham said.
“The ads that are created through Design An Ad are fresh, and show that the young people can identify selling points that adults may appreciate. They provide a chance to see what message is getting out there about a business and how it is perceived.
“I would like to thank the Illawarra Mercury, and its staff for co-ordinating such a fantastic competition.”
