The kerb and gutter, surface drainage and road widening works on the road between Bankbook Drive and Jersey Farm Road are being constructed as part of the $11.3 million Wongawilli Access Project.
The council is relocating the water service for Wongawilli Village and the extended community.
Wollongong Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery, councillor Cameron Walters and Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward inspected the site on Monday.
“Work on the Wongawilli Access project will provide flood reliable access for residents as well as making that section reliable in minor floods,” Cr Bradbery said.
“We’ll also improve the Shone Avenue and West Dapto Road intersection, and rail crossing and install traffic lights.
“The project will also include better drainage as well as parking lanes and shared pedestrian and bike paths.”
M Ward said the road was Wongawilli, which was located between the Illawarra escarpment and Dapto, was susceptible to high rainfall events which can impact on road access for the local community.
“This project was awarded $2.4 million funding from the Restart NSW Resources for Regions program and will reduce the risk of flooding for the access road and a number of properties within Wongawilli, as well as significantly improve access for heavy vehicles to the Wongawilli Colliery,” Mr Ward said.
The Access project is part of the West Dapto Access Strategy to provide better, flood reliable access to enhance the potential of West Dapto.
The council is managing the project, with funding also provided by Council and developer contributions.
The Wongawilli Road upgrade will be completed in five phases, the first of which has started with the installation of stormwater drainage between Bankbook Drive and Jersey Farm Road being completed and works for road widening and kerb installation.
The remaining phases will be completed consecutively over the current and next calendar year.
Works will progress east over the coming months.
Stage two of the project, including the intersection of Wongawilli Road and Shone Avenue, is currently in detailed design and will likely be delivered in two construction stages.
Construction of stage two will commence following the completion of the stage one works.
