The Corona SunSets festival held on the beach at North Wollongong on Saturday was billed as something unique.
It certainly lived up to its reputation as being the “coolest” festival we have seen in the region.
Over 7500 turned up to the international event which featured a range of dance acts across the day and night.
The setting for the concert was sensational and the imagery beamed out from the concert live across the world was sensational.
The social media channels of the Corona festival is some 14 million strong and those turning in would have been salivating at the seaside setting of the event.
It was extraordinary.
Destination Wollongong has predicted the festival to contribute around $1.8 million into the local economy.
Not a bad return for a one-off event.
Given that the theme of the festival also centred around caring for the environment organisers took great responsibility in cleaning up the Wollongong landmark.
Patrons were invited back to the beach on Sunday to help ensure the area was left in the best possible state after the event.
“We’re a brand and we’re all about beach and oceans, more and more now we’re about trying to protect the beaches and the oceans from things like marine plastic pollution,” Andy Vance, Corona Marketing Manager Australia, told the Illawarra Mercury.
Organisers also ditched single-use plastics at the event, took monetary “plastic-free pledges” for patrons (going to charity Parley) and enlisted the Clean Vibes’ Green Team to dispose of waste “responsibly”.
Outside of that, crowd behaviour at the event appears to be pretty good.
By comparison of the 7500 in attendance, police reported a relatively low number of people found to be doing the wrong thing.
While the sun has gone down on the event, Corona SunSets will be fondly remembered for putting our region in the international spotlight yet again.
