The region has been enjoying an unexpected drop in the price of petrol since the highs of around 160 cents a litre in October.
This week, the price at the pump is as a low as 120 cents a litre – a drop of 40 cents.
But the NRMA is tipping the days of low prices are numbered.
The motoring body is predicting the price in Sydney is stabilising and is expected to rise by the end of the week.
As we get closer to Christmas the price at the pump could reach as high as 140 cents a litre.
This rise is significant for the Illawarra as the region tends to follow the Sydney petrol price cycle – albeit with a lag of a few days.
So Illawarra motorists can expect to see prices heading upwards from the weekend.
The message is simple – fill up now before the prices start climbing.
