Traders In Purple have been awarded a tender by the NSW Government to redevelop a vacant site at 1-4 Robert Street, Corrimal.
The redevelopment of the decommissioned school site is part of the NSW government’s Communities Plus program.
The tender required delivery of an integrated private, social and affordable housing development whereby a number of homes are returned to the NSW Government and managed by a community housing provider on completion.
The vacant site is planned to accommodate 34 new dwellings.
The Corrimal project would deliver 13 townhouses to the private market and a three-storey, 21-apartment building comprised of 14 private market dwellings, seven social dwellings and three affordable dwellings.
A development application has been lodged with Wollongong City Council.
“We are aiming for construction to commence once an approval is received, expected in the first half of 2019, and hope that these homes can be occupied as soon as possible,” TIP director Charles Daoud said.
Earlier this year, innovative proposals were sought to deliver about 60 new affordable, social and private housing dwellings at a Crown Street site.
The Wollongong site is part of the Communities Plus program, aiming to utilise social housing sites for redevelopment to provide more social housing mixed with private and affordable housing.
A fire at 15-19 Crown Street, Wollongong in 2016 led to the loss of six of the complex’s 22 units, with the affected tenants subsequently relocated to alternative accommodation.
Expressions of interest were sought for the redevelopment of the site.
Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward said they were hoping the redevelopment would increase the number of dwellings to about 60.
