But it seems a chunk of it will go to the Maldon-Dombarton freight line.

On November 8, Illawarra Labor MPs Ryan Park, Anna Watson and Paul Scully stood outside Wollongong station to promise that, if Labor won the 2019 election, it would spend $2.4 billion on the rail line.

At the time Mr Park promised that “specifics will be outlined over the next few weeks”.

However, a month later and the specifics of how that money will be spent have not been publicly outlined.

In terms of a deadline, Mr Park would only say “the community will know our priorities well in advance of the March election.”

While the detail is lacking, the freight line seems in the forefront of their planning.

“We continue to work on finalising our plans,” Mr Park said.

“But we have always been clear about ensuring the Maldon-Dombarton rail line is completed.

“We must work to separate freight from passenger services. This is one piece of the puzzle.

“This is a commitment the government refuses to match.

“They fail to see the importance of this missing link.”

Mr Park said the government was “kidding themselves” if they thought the $4.6 million it had allocated this week for the investigations into four rail lines was the answer.

“And let’s be clear this announcement  isn’t going to improve a single service on the South Coast line,” Mr Park said.

“It’s only a study for a project that will come with a price tag into the billions.”
