PRIMITIVE SUPERSTITIONS
The Midweek Musings of Father Brenan Lee (Illawarra Mercury, December 5) and his comical attempt to explain evolution, gives good reason to remove all religion from all schools in general, unless studied in the context of mythology. How can we teach children critical thought, science and history when we indoctrinate them with religious mumbo jumbo? This, the same week Einstein’s 1954 God Letter is in the news. “The word God for me is nothing more than the product and expression of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection full of honorable but still primitive legends.
No interpretation, no matter how subtle, can change it (for me). These refined interpretations are naturally highly diverse and have almost nothing to do with the original text. For me, the unadulterated Jewish religion, like every other religion, is an incarnation of primitive superstitions.”
Though Einstein was writing about the Jewish faith, his words are applicable to all faiths. Father Brenan writes of belief and values at a time when the Royal Commission has shown the totally corrupt and perverted ‘values’ of the churches. Still we indoctrinate our children with ‘primitive superstitions’.

NO END IN SIGHT
Political correctness works both ways. There is a view that opposing the 18-year war in Afghanistan is apparently unAustralian and undermines the sacrifices our Australian military forces. I have utmost respect for the duty that our military who undertake there duties however I believe that the objectives they must undertake are simply unachievable in a military campaign that can never be won. History clearly demonstrates that military force will never win a war in Afghanistan. Surely after 18 years of conflict it is clearly apparent that current military strategies have failed.
It is time to reflect whether our adherence to US policies needs to be reviewed and we stand as a truly independent nation. I don't want Australians to die for an unachievable goal based on ideological reasons. It is time for Australians to challenge the policy makers not the soldiers and say enough is enough. We should support our defence forces and the sacrifices they have made but it's time to question what is the point. I believe it is time to challenge why Australians being sacrificed in a war that has been going on for 18 years with no sight of ending.

IT ALL ADDS UP
I had a little chuckle to myself this morning while reading Dave Cox’s letter “Doing The Math”. Dave has obviously penned a joke to ease some of the negativity that regularly makes up the Letters Page. I wonder how many fell for it. The maths joke was: If you add the year of your birth to the age in years that you are now, the answer to this simple math problem is,….2018. And is the answer that everyone will arrive at. Dave also espouses that it only works for 2018 and will not happen again for another thousand years. Factually Dave, since the year that you were born is a constant. Naturally your age increases by one as each successive year since you were born increases by one. As for this occurring again in a thousand years time, if you add your current age (or the age you will be in the current year) to the year of your birth, you will get the current year.
