While this can be an emotional time for year 12’s, Career Development Association of Australian president Wanda Hayes urged students not to panic and focus on what they can achieve with their results.
She said school leavers needed to remember that the only purpose of the ATAR was to get students into their first tertiary level program.
“I know some students believe that their results define them for the rest of their lives. But once they are into a university program the rest is up to them,” Ms Hayes said.
She encouraged those students who can’t get into a university course to enrol into a university preparation course, which will also give them a new rank at the end.
Ms Hayes said that while statistics show university graduates have higher workplace participation, university is not the right career path for everyone.
“There are many career paths that don’t require a degree. Students should also look into the study opportunities available at TAFE and other RTOs,” she said.
Those struggling to make decisions are encouraged to get advice from trusted colleagues.
