One weekend has totally transformed the season of our national sporting team, the Illawarra Hawks.
Many had already written the Hawks off for the 2018-2019 National Basketball league season.
The side was languishing in the bottom half of the ladder, had performed inconsistently all season and the critics were lining up to each take a shot, some might suggest deservedly.
What faced the Hawks before the weekend was arguably their toughest road trip of the year.
A game in Cairns on Friday night, followed by a game in Adelaide on Sunday.
Well, the Hawks defied the critics and picked up not one, but both wins to shoot back into finals contention.
The Hawks held sway over Cairns for much of the game on Friday night and then roared back to life in the last quarter to put paid to Adelaide on Sunday with Jordair Jett nailing a buzz-beating drive to the basket.
Fans had rightfully been concerned about the nature of some of the side’s loses, but again on the weekend the Hawks showed the signs that had given so many hope leading into the season.
It again showed signs of a willingness to do whatever it takes as a team.
To fight for every inch.
That had been missing at times in previous weeks, but it was back in a big way at the weekend.
It sets up a huge showdown at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Sunday against the Hawks’ arch rivals the Sydney Kings.
The millionaire’s mob will roll down the highway on Sunday led by none other than marquee man and former NBA star Andrew Bogut.
Add in Jerome Randle and the club’s own former MVP Kevin Lisch, there will be plenty to play for on Sunday.
There is a lot on the line again for the Hawks who were dominated by the Kings in their last clash in Sydney just a few weeks ago.
Do not miss it.
