LOVE THIS CITY
I am a keen reader and contributor of the Mercury opinion pages, and all through 2018, I have read many letters dealing with depressing subjects, such as “Lefties, Marxist, dog poo, train times “, and not to forget the frequent subject of religion, and the sometimes strange interpretations of it.

I think everybody should take a good look at where we live , and what we have here in Australia and our city Wollongong.
We are so lucky, stop complaining ! Today for instance,I had a long swim in an ocean pool then had lunch in one of the many eateries in town, travelled with the free loop bus back home, and I bless the fact
that I live here, rather than in a war zone elsewhere in the world. and that I have freedom to voice an opinion and have plenty to eat.
In the words of John Laws: “You got to love this city” . Happy and a peaceful Christmas to all.

HEWSON THE HORRIBLE
I find myself shaking my head in disbelief once again. I have just read “Hewson’s View” in the Illawarra Mercury (December 7, 2018).Where does this bloke get off?
This is the bloke who lost the unlosable election to Labor in 1993.
This is the bloke that was going to bring the GST into Australia’s tax mix but couldn’t explain how it would work, using a birthday cake as a simple example.
This is the bloke that has about as much political acumen as Hagar The Horrible. This bloke is a loser.
Yet he spends half his life writing for newspapers and appearing on the ABC radio and TV where he constantly criticises Liberal politicians and Liberal policies, when he clearly has insufficient credibility to publicly promote any political opinion.
Hewson is simply another one of those ex Liberals who can’t stand failure and rejection.
He has become a bitter and twisted man who simply wants to cause damage to the political party he once led, just like Malcolm Turnbull.
Richard Burnett, Wollongong
PLEASE GET ON WITH IT
Here we go again. High speed trains revisited once again, Maldon Dombarton Rail link revisited again, Albion Park bypass, two feasibility studies over 30 years.
So much inaction by successive Governments, sick of all the hype. Get on with it and restore some faith in government.
Peter Tornaros, Oak Flats
A QUICK FIX
A quick fix for the Aussie men’s cricket team. Recruit some of our female players.

RAILING ON LABOR
I do not want to be remembered as the rooster claiming responsibility for the dawn of a new day, but with a looming general election standby for one of Labor’s perennial ‘sleeping giants’ to be rolled out - another Maldon-Dombarton rail feasibility study.
In the 15-odds years spent in the Greater Illawarra Labor has never failed to produce a wry smile on the ‘gem’.
There must be a few ‘sucker’ votes in it for them ‘cause Labor has maintained a consistent position on this inert fantasy.
