Trains were stopped in both directions between the stations while the fires were extinguished.
Passengers may experience some delay. They are advised to allow extra travel time, listen to announcements and check indicator boards.
NSW Rural Fire Service operational officer for the Illawarra Col Church said two small fires had broken out in the rail corridor near Dunmore about 4.45pm.
Two crews with about 10 firefighters were dispatched.
Mr Church said the cause of the fire was still to be determined but it could have been sparked by power lines.
“We had to get access to enter the rail corridor,” he said.
“The trains were stopped while we extinguished the fires, which we did as quickly as we could so people could get home.”
