Nervous HSC students woke to text messages with their results on Thursday morning.
The results were pleasing for many, especially 10 Illawarra students who excelled in a number of their HSC subjects to feature in the all-round achievers’ list.
This prestigious ‘all-rounders’ honour is afforded only to the students who achieved a result in the highest band (Band 6 or Band E4) in 10 or more units of courses in their current pattern of study.
Smith’s Hill High School students dominated this list. Eight of the the 10 Illawarra students on the all-round achievers’ list came from the Wollongong school.
This was music to the ears of principal David Deitz.
“We are very pleased with the overall performance of students at the school with 73 Distinguished Achievers and eight All Round Achievers in addition to the two top achievers,” he said.
Mr Deitz is talking about Hannah Robinson and Jasmine Lowe, who topped the state in the Swedish Continuers and Indonesian Beginners course respectively.
Hannah’s studies were conducted as an accelerated student through the Swedish School in Sydney, while Jasmine did her studies through the NSW School of Languages.
The other two spots were taken by The Illawarra Grammar School (TIGS) duo Risini Gamage and Ji Yoon Kang.
Interestingly all but one of the 10 all-rounders was a female student.
Risini Gamage said she was very happy with how she went.
The TIGS student secured a prestigious all-rounders’ nod after impressing in Biology (96), Chemistry (93), English (93), Mathematics Extension 1 (94), Mathematics Extension 2 (87) and Physics (92).
Risini has been offered a scholarship to study medicine at Western Sydney University, which she plans to accept.
TIGS also had 43 students make the Distinguished Achievers’ list.
Meantime, seven Illawarra students made the top achievers’ list, after finishing in the top 10 in one or more of their subjects.
Smith’s Hill High School again did well, with three students on the list.
Kiama High School was next best with two, with Shellharbour Anglican College (Dunmore) and St Mary Star of the Sea College having one student each on the list.
The St Mary Star of the Sea College student Christina Chiaverini also topped the state to finish first in the Legal Studies course.
The Illawarra had hundreds of distinguished achievers. Students will get their ATAR scores on Friday.
