But the iconic fashion designer, who was recognised with a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa), was just as impressed with how good the graduating students looked.

“The girls looked fantastic. They really put an effort in, as did the boys. They were a very good looking crowd,” she said.

Ms Zampatti established her eponymous label in the 1960s.

A legend of the Australian fashion industry and a champion for women in business, she hoped her story inspired others to follow their dream.

“I think what I’ve been doing with my life probably resonates with some of the students at the university,” she said.

“If I can do it, they can definitely and I think it is the kind of opportunity you can have in this country.

“If you have some talent and you apply it very well, you can succeed.

“We are all so privileged to be able to do that in this country.”

UOW Vice-Chancellor Paul Wellings said Ms Zampatti inspires students to follow their dreams.

“She also inspires women to become entrepreneurs and leaders in their fields,” Professor Wellings said.

The well-travelled Ms Zampatti was visiting Wollongong for the first time on Thursday.

“This is a special first though. I will always remember my first time in Wollongong,” she said.

“I’m so impressed with the university. I love the sense of community and energy and the drive it has.

“Everyone who has had a role to play in the university should be absolutely proud.”
