Illawarra surf-pop duo Hockey Dad are in contention for the highly coveted Australian Music Prize – naming the nation’s best album of the year based solely on artistic merit.

It’s judge by 21 industry professionals including artists, journalists, retailers and programmers. The ultimate winner receives $30,000 in prize money.
“We’re both very honoured to be nominated,” Zach Stephenson told the Mercury.
“Many of our favourite bands have won it before and we are just happy to be out there in the running.”
Hockey Dad are nominated for their sophomore album Blend Inn, which debuted at number six on the ARIA Australian Artist Top 50 chart in February.
They’re nominated alongside Amy Shark, DZ Deathrays, Gurrumul, Kasey Chambers, Matt Corby, The Presets and Sarah Blasko to name a few.
The competition is respected along with global contemporaries like the UK’s Mercury Prize and Canada’s Polaris Prize. Previous winners include The Drones, AB Original, Courtney Barnett, Sampa the Great, Lisa Mitchell and The Jezabels.
The shortlist of nine releases will be unveiled in early 2019, and the winner to be announced in March.
