The storms are the result of warm humid air feeding into a trough that lies about the western plains of NSW, combined with an upper low pressure system entering the far southwest.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding across the Illawarra on Thursday night.
