It’s believed William McCarthy, 59, and Francisca Boterhoven De Haan, 60, went bushwalking in the Ettrema Gorge – west of Nowra – on Saturday.
Mr McCarthy was expected to return to his home in Canberra by Tuesday but did not return.
The alarm was raised with police about 1.30pm on Wednesday.
A search was launched utilising resources from South Coast Police District, PolAir, the Westpac and NSW Ambulance helicopters, and the SES.
Shortly before 2pm on Thursday 13 December 2018, the walkers made contact with searchers by mobile phone.
Their location has been confirmed. However, given it is an estimated two-hour walk into the gorge, and because weather conditions were deteriorating, a decision was made to suspend the retrieval operation until first light on Friday.
Searchers have confirmed the walkers are uninjured and have shelter. Their families have been notified.
A decision will be made on Friday morning whether they will be walked out or extracted by air.
