Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Sunday the former defence chief and current NSW Governor would take the national post next year.
Governor Hurley, who was born in Wollongong and grew up in Warrawong, will replace the current Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove some time after the federal election.
Mr Morrison said Governor Hurley was his “first and only” choice for the position.
Governor Hurley said he and wife Linda were looking forward to the new role.
“My commitment to the people of Australia is that we will fulfil our responsibilities in the same full-hearted manner that we have worked in NSW over the past four years,” he said.
