Police say the 45-year-old victim from Unanderra was walking on Gallop Street around 7:40pm when an unknown man on a trail bike rode by.
Lake Illawarra Police District duty officer Matt Brophy told the Mercury an altercation between the two men ensued, where it’s believed the rider stabbed the man before fleeing the scene.
“Members of the public called us because the victim sought some shelter from a nearby house,” Acting Inspector Brophy said.
He said detectives have already ruled out it was not a road rage incident, nor was it related any New Year’s Eve parties.
The victim suffered non-life threatening lacerations to his arm and lower back and was taken to Wollongong Hospital for treatment. At this stage he is not assisting police with inquiries.
A number of police vehicles and officers were seen in the street at the time.
Investigations into the matter continue.
