Earlier: Wollongong’s City Beach was closed on New Year’s Day due to a shark sighting in the area around noon.
Surf Life Saving NSW duty officer Lachlan Pritchard said the beach was expected to reopen Tuesday afternoon as searches confirmed the shark had moved on.
A DPI helicopter initially spotted the White Pointer – around three metres in length – at about 12:19pm and not far off shore.
As a result the beach was closed.
Mr Pritchard said they had sent in rescue water craft and support operation skis to conduct searches along with the helicopter.
Swimmers and surfers were cleared from the area for their own safety.
The Department of Primary Industries helicopter is used to sweep beach locations during busy times to ensure the safety of beach goers.
