Sunday evening's game against Melbourne City at AAMI Park comes hot on the heels of the Jets' 2-2 draw with Brisbane Roar on Wednesday and a 2-1 defeat to Adelaide United three days earlier.

It also kicks off a tough run of away fixtures which includes a return to AAMI Park next Saturday to face defending champions Melbourne Victory.

Just one of seventh-placed Newcastle's next six games will be played at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Tiredness is an obvious concern for a Jets side that ran out of legs against Brisbane, conceding a late equaliser after dominating the first half.

"It was evident in the game in the last 15 minutes. It was a bit of a slugfest," assistant coach Clayton Zane told reporters.

"We've seen it earlier in the year. Total domination in the first half and you know that you need that second or third goal just to put the game to bed.

"We're very happy with our performance (for 80 minutes) ... probably that last 10 minutes is one that we'll want to forget."

Newcastle have kept their preparation for the City game minimal, giving players a day off and restricting them to light training sessions.

The Jets will take an unchanged squad to Melbourne but will likely tinker with their starting line-up as they look to address their inability to put away opponents.

"It's not a lack of willingness. People are getting in the right areas," Zane said.

"When we go back and look at what our structure should be, the boys are ticking all the boxes but it's just unfortunately not falling at the moment."

Fourth-placed City will line up as firm favourites after dispatching of Western Sydney 2-0 on Tuesday night.

The Jets proved no match for Warren Joyce's side last time they travelled to AAMI Park, going down 3-0.

"We didn't turn up that day," Zane said.

"We've obviously dropped some serious points in these last two games so we need to go there with a positive mindset and know that we can match the so-called stars of the league."
