The annual arts and culture festival, which officially launched on Wednesday and runs until January 27, will this year focus on human endeavour and the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
For those who find cycling to and from work is no longer a test, the festival offers Fly Me to the Moon - which challenges Sydneysiders to collectively cycle some 385,000 kilometres.
The public can either ride on stationary bikes in the CBD, donate kilometres from their own cycling trips or get a feel for flying by cycling in the Lunar Velocipede - a rickshaw bike with giant wings.
Festival-goers can also visit five other moon-themed installations, such as Apollo 11 at Barangaroo which celebrates unsung heroes in space exploration.
Moon Drops, giant rubber-encased drops of water up to eight metres wide, will also allow people to experience the weightlessness inside the earth's gravitational pull.
Sydney Festival director Wesley Enoch said the three-week event offered something for everyone.
"You can stalk huge orange astronauts, float on a massive outdoor waterbed, cycle your way to the moon - it's up to you," Mr Enoch said in a statement.
