The man was at the wheel of a white Ford Falcon that rounded a bend northbound, about 12kms from Wollongong, before colliding with the back driver’s side of the Pantech.
Police Chief Inspector Paul Allman said the truck driver, who had a passenger on board, had pulled to the roadside not long before impact.
“They were having some engine problems, so they pulled over just to check the truck,” he said.
“They had their hazard lights on … It looks like the [Ford] driver has lost control of that vehicle and collided with the rear end of the stationary truck.”
Police have been told the car was in danger of catching fire, post-impact.
The truck driver took the Pantech about 50 metres down the roadway to get away from the blaze.
The truck’s occupants and passers-by tried in vain to save the injured driver.
“They [the truck driver and passenger] are very upset and shaken,” Insp Allman said.
“They tried to render assistance with other members of the public, who commenced CPR until ambulance arrived. They were unable to get him out of the car and unfortunately he wasn’t able to be revived at the scene.”
Forensic investigators are attending the site and are expected to examine both vehicles before preparing a report for the coroner.
The Mercury understands northbound lanes will likely remain closed until at least 9pm.
