Crime and thriller filled the 10 spots of adult fiction books loaned last year.
Lee Child continued to reign supreme with three books in the top 10 – The Midnight Line, Night School and No Middle Name, which were borrowed 316, 277 and 266 times, respectively.
The British author was joined by Michael Connelly, David Baldacci, John Grisham and Harlan Coben to fill out the top adult fiction books. Child has topped the top 10 adult fiction list for the past few years.
However, Australian writer Liane Moriarty was the most popular author for 2018 with her novel Truly, madly, guilty borrowed 391 times. The title was joined by Big Little Lies in the top 20 list.
Wollongong City Council’s library and community services acting manager, Mark Norman, said borrowing from the library was a great way to read the latest and most popular titles.
“We’ve more than 1.23 million loans across our seven branches in 2018 with our most prolific customer taking home an extraordinary 2,877 items,” he said.
“We know when it comes to adult fiction crime titles does pay, so to speak, and our customers love them.
“However, our library members also love to read Australian stories by Australian authors.
“This is clear in the Top 20 titles which has Liane Moriarty, Scott Pape, Jane Harper, Heather Morris, Jimmy Barnes, Andy Griffiths and Anh Do are all represented alongside international bestsellers like Lee Child and Michael Connelly.’’
For junior readers Anh Do is the most popular author by a long shot – with titles in 8 of the 10 top spots.
John Green continues to be a leader for youth readers. Green’s The Fault in our Stars takes out second place behind R.J. Palacino’s Wonder, and is joined in the Top 10 by Green’s Paper Towns and Turtles All The Way Down.
Mr Norman said joining the library was easy and free and opened up readers to a new world of books, magazines, music and DVDs in the library and online.
“If your New Year’s resolution is to read more in 2019, why not join in with Wollongong City Libraries 2019 Reading Challenge?,” he said.
