Stockland owns the site and its business/commercial arm is advancing with preparations to reopen the large building.
The Illawarra Mercury has contacted the company for more information about timing and likely occupants.
Shellharbour Mayor Marianne Saliba said Stockland required a Development Application to make a variation to the building from its previous role as a single use role.
“They have DA approval to change that from one building into five,” Cr Saliba said.
“What they are doing to the building is they are dividing it into five stores and putting five shop fronts on it.
“I think they have been working on it now for about four or five months.
“Dividers and doors have gone in for five entries.
“It is already bulky goods.
“Any of the bulky goods businesses can go in there without another DA”.
It has been about 10 months since Bunnings Warehouse Shellharbour relocated to the former Masters store site at 15 Shandon Circuit, Albion Park.
Since then rumours have spread about businesses such as TK Maxx and Spotlight occupying the site.
Cr Saliba said because of the zoning any of the occupants had to be bulky goods stores.
She said outlets such as Spotlight and Chemist Warehouse are the kinds of businesses that would classify but probably not TK Maxx.
Merchandise put in by pallet qualify as bulky goods as opposed to items just put on a shelf individually.
“Spotlight would qualify as a bulky good store. I would love Spotlight,” Cr Saliba said.
“Officeworks is the other one I would love to be in there,” she said.
“I have heard talk about some of those going in are businesses already operating in Shellharbour and they are relocating to there.
“But if that is the case that will free up those buildings for other businesses to come in.
“It still means for us a win in Shellharbour. There is an opportunity to attract more business to the city”.
The timing is considered good with work on Shellharbour Marina now advanced.
