The Mercury understands the boy was under water for about 30 seconds before being lifted to safety by a family member.
A Wollongong City Council spokesperson said pool lifeguards assisted the boy at approximately 4.55pm near the steps leading into the 50-metre pool.
“Council's lifeguards treated the child at the pool and provided oxygen. They did not need to administer CPR.
“An ambulance attended and transported the child to hospital,” the spokesperson said.
The pools closed for the day at about 5.20pm. It is usually open until 7pm.
A hospital spokesperson said the boy was in a stable condition.
