The Bureau of Meteorology’s latest forecast paints a welcome picture for those celebrating our national day outdoors – either in private or at one of many public events across the region.
Temperatures will peak on Saturday, Australia Day, with forecast highs of 29 degrees in Wollongong and 33 at Albion Park – up to four degrees warmer than last year.
If those maximums are reached, it would be the hottest Australia Day at Albion Park since 2003 (when a top of 32 was recorded) and the warmest January 26 in 20 years of records at the bureau’s coastal weather station in Bellambi.
Those competing in the Wollongong Australia Day aquathon will be keeping their cool, while the water activities at the youth “chill out zone” on Flagstaff Hill will no doubt be popular.
A southerly change will see a shower or two develop during Sunday, dropping temps along the coast by a few degrees.
The public holiday on Monday should be cooler – tops of 24 degrees in the city and 27 inland – with a possible shower.
Meanwhile, drivers have been reminded that double demerits will be in force from 12.01am on Friday until 11.59pm on Monday.
